This stage of blower door test depressurizes or pressurizes the home to identify issues with the air barrier and is implemented at mid-construction.
It indicates if the proposed building airtightness target is likely to be met at time of completion. It is not a code requirement but is useful to determine if the home is on-track to meet minimum airtightness requirements or builder targets. If all exterior penetrations happen to have been completed at this time, then the test can be utilized for occupancy.
When Do I schedule it?
It needs to be scheduled at a point in the construction when:
1. It is not too late to effectively remedy identified air leakage issues. This depends on the air barrier approach.
2. Air barrier is substantially complete. (Typically Post Insulation, Pre Drywall)
3. Builder representatives are available to attend (technician must have 1 hr +/- of uninterrupted time where persons are not entering or exiting dwelling)
Lakewood Home Energy will supply a technician to:
Gather measurements required for volume and area calculations
Performing the airtightness test
Locating, documenting & discussing the air leakage areas with builder. (Utilizing Thermal Camera, smoke pens, theatrical fog, and by feel)
Determining preliminary blower door metrics
Mid-construction blower door testing services can also include:
Advice on air sealing techniques and products
Blower door guided air sealing
A formal report
*Any additional blower door testing on dwelling will be discounted.
